PREVIEW - The Vaal Thursday

The Vaal Classic track stages 8 races on a soft track on Thursday

Race 1:
Preview: SECRET STAR ran well on Grand Heritage day over 1400m and the form has been franked and considering she over raced she should relish the step down in trip from a good draw. BIBLICAL SUSAN made a fine debut over 1000m and has a plum draw. ROSE OF SOWETO made a fair debut but has a tough draw. (David Thiselton 13-4-11)
Race 2:
Preview: AL HAMD, an Australian-bred by top sire Snitzel and a half-brother to the useful Alice Springs, has run well in two starts and could go in from a good draw for an in form yard. AIR FORCE LEGEND is knocking on the door and could get it right in this uninspiring field despite a tricky draw. SPEED MONITOR can earn if settling. ENCHANTED ROCK ran a fair race last time over 1200m, the form has been franked and looking at his female side this Seventh Rock gelding could stay the trip. PAMPIERSTAD made a fair debut and should enjoy the step up in trip. OLD GUARD is by Dynasty out of the useful sprinter to 1400m Graded winner Headstrong, but Mary Slack’s retained rider Anthony Delpech is conspicuous by his absence. (David Thiselton 8-1-3-2-12)
Race 3:
Preview: RHYME OR REASON ran a cracker over 1400m on Grand Heritage day and the form has worked out very well. FLIPFLASH has a nice stride and looks to have scope so can do well here from a good draw over a step up in trip she will relish.  DELIGHTFUL DANCER is by Dynasty out of July heroine Dancer’s Daughter and can build on a fair debut over 1450m by going to the front from a wide draw. FLAMINGO VLEI can improve on a fair debut when staying on over 1200m as she should relish the step up in trip. ROSE WATER could earn if settling better than last time. ATOMIC BELLE, GOLDDUST WOMAN and SANTA MONICA can’t be ignored.  (David Thiselton 15-11-9-10-1)
Race 4:
Preview: LET IT RAIN ran a cracker from a similarly wide draw over 1800m on Turffontein Inside last time when nabbed late and before that caused a 28/1 shock in a Graduation Plate over 1800m, cruising in by three lengths despite being considerably under sufferance. He could be running off a capped merit rating and being by Dynasty has likely come into his own so is the one to side with despite another tricky draw. ARPAD is knocking on the door and is down to a competitive merit rating over a suitable course and distance. IN THE LOOP won well over 1450m at this track last time. He is now six points higher and widely drawn but significantly Gavin Lerena has remained aboard. (David Thiselton 2-8-1)
Race 5:
Preview: KOMESHAN’S FLIGH came from last to win cosily last time over this trip on Turffontein Inside and the form has been franked. She looks above average and should rise above the 77 merit rating she was awarded. MY CHERRY is well drawn and her only poor run recently has been when taking on the boys over a 2600m trip. Back against females over this step down in trip she could do well off a mark only three points higher than her last win. PEARL VALLEY goes well for Fortune and although she has yet another tricky draw she looks to have come into her own and can earn if having luck in running. (David Thiselton 5-1-4)
Race 6:
Preview: NETFLIX has class and scope and is well drawn over a suitable trip. His run in the Grand Heritage can be ignored as he had an impossible draw over a trip sharper than ideal. ENBHARR is a progressive sort running over a suitable trip for an in form yard. BOY BOY is drawn in pole over a suitable course and distance and is 3kg better off with Frappachinio for a 1,25 length beating over 2000m. FRAPPACHINO is a typically improving son of Ideal World who has won his last two over 2000m, but now has a tough draw and a four point merit rating raise to contend with. KANONKOP’s breathing issues are off putting, but he certainly has ability and is only two points higher for his win over this trip last time. (David Thiselton 1-3-6-7-8)
Race 7:
Preview: DONNY G is speedy so will relish the step down in trip and is the one to beat if able to overcome quite a high draw. MIRACLE BUREAU is 1,5kg under sufferance on official merit ratings but has caught the eye over this trip recently and from a pole position draw it wouldn’t be a great surprise to see him mowing the field down with his fine finishing effort. AMAZING STRIKE should be cherry ripe and over an ideal course and distance has a good draw for a change and has dropped to a competitive merit rating. WILL PAYS is a classy sort who is distance suited and well drawn, but he does have a three point merit rated raise to contend with, so it will not be easy. CAPTAIN ALDO is the dark horse here as he ran a cracker over this trip in a handicap a year ago and despite being 19 points higher in the merit ratings is likely to be finishing strongly. (David Thiselton 4-9-6-1-2)
Race 8:
Preview: GIMMETHEMONEY was up with the pace throughout over course and distance last time out and kicked well to win cosily. She is four points higher, but the whip was not drawn in that last race and the Gimmethegreenlights seems to improve all the time. Furthermore, Piere Strydom has kept the ride. LITTLE SWIFT is 1,5kg better off with Gimmethemoney for a 1,5 length beating over course and distance. On that occasion she was slow away and ran on strongly, so should get closer. There is very little in it and it will be an intriguing rematch which could go either way, but Gimmethemoney strikes as the one to side with over this minimum trip. ANGIE BEE beat a below par Gimmethemoney the last time they met and has a chance, but is more exposed and therefore not as appealing. MOVIE SHOW also has the beating of Gimmethemoney on paper, but is also exposed, although she can earn too. WINTER BREEZE, LEVI LADY and CELTIC LADY can’t be ignored. (David Thiselton 1-5-11-2-10)
