TITLE: ‘Braai & Gallop’ – Here’s A Weekend Winner!
DATE: 19 September 2023

Cape Town- Champion Charles Dicken’s full-brother Somerset Maugham bids to
defend his title when ten runners line up in a high-class renewal of the R200 000
Hollywoodbets Listed Settlers Trophy at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the much
anticipated ‘Braai & Gallop’ raceday on Saturday 23 September.
A five-time winning son of champion sire Trippi, the 6yo Somerset Maugham is one of
three runners from the yard of SA champion trainer Justin Snaith, and will be looking
to assert his claims again after a dramatic victory over Han Solo in the boardroom last
year.
The Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy is the headline event on a nine-race card that gets
underway at 12h10 and marks the third racemeeting of the 2023 Hollywoodbets Spring
Country series.
Gates open at 11am.
Racing fans are set to mingle with festive families and fabulous foodies in what will be
a richly South African, action-packed day in celebration of Heritage Day.
‘Braai & Gallop’ is the perfect family celebration of our South African heritage, and
Saturday’s fun day out sees the best braai-masters in the Cape test their recipes and
skills in a potjiekos competition of Grade 1 proportions!
The potjiekos contestants will be going head-to-head on the lush lawns of the rustic
racecourse, against the background of thundering hooves on the track, as local
culinary wizards transform the traditional South African dish into a masterpiece of epic
proportions, bidding to win their share of R25 000.
A panel of esteemed judges will crown the next Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy
Potjiekos Champion on a day which will be a feast for all the senses, with top local
entertainment acts treating visitors to a variety of music, engaging activations, and
entertainment for all. For the young set, there will be a dedicated fun zone with
everything from jumping-castles to face painting, fun and games, and plenty more.
The range of thoroughbred indulgences include locally crafted beer, Western Cape
wines, and gins to quench your thirst.
Food stalls will offer a culinary adventure, from mouth-watering braais to nostalgic
South African delicacies.
Make it a highlight of your long weekend and let's toast our vibrant heritage, where
every note, every flavour, and every majestic winner gallops to the rhythm of the
rainbow nation's heart.

.....these Cape guys are big fighters.....which shows a willingness to win.....pity that no others were fighting as hard but instead resting on the donations .....and did very little more to breath life into our local racing .....may the fighters continue to win and save it....

Cape Racing is relying on "donations" from Hollywoodbets and Mr Bortz. The main source of stakes stated many times is derived from Tote take outs. At some stage you do not want to rely on your own money or from a subsidary company to run Cape Racing. Its like flogging a dead horse.

Yesterday they had Parx Racing in USA in the state of Pennsylvania. About 2 hours after that racing commenced at Presque Isle Downs and about 3 hours later at Penn National. All in the state of Pennsylvania. American racing is heavily reliant on Tote take outs. How it is possible for 3 tracks to race on the same day in the same state and none of them are "Premier" tracks although Parx does stage 2 Grade 1s. They are doing something right and they should take a leaf out of their book.

Racing has lost the punter.... Very few new punters even give racing a glance, and the high-end punters that have kept racing going, with no disrespect are getting old and either dying or their income streams decrease

Tough times ahead

Brilliant innovation. Why hasn’t this been done before? 🤷‍♂️

There is a big difference between burning your own money and working very hard to try and get a return..... and taking other peoples money to burn with little chance to even try to earn.....

.....did our local tote okes use any of these venues to try earn a few BOB.....and why are they not doing their damnest best to try grow revenue from the other many international venues by offering more exotic offerings to try enthuse die hard punters to churn more.....

They did have Parx which normally races from Monday to Wednesdays. For some strange reason they stopped and yesterday they covered harness racing from Sweden in the night.

I see now that the tracks that I mentioned in Pennsylvania have a casino which contributes to the horse racing stakes. Something like bookmakers tax that goes to racing but a much smaller scale. On another note, the Sport Pool betting they raking millions every month but where is that money going to.

Also Sunbet made over R334 million from their website so what are our Operators doing to maximise their profits from they own sites, to have casino games, sports, horse racing, etc.

.....little steps Naresh.....that Cape dynamo is getting all his ducks in a row....1st found that his investment in gaming was a bit odd....however in being a much more appealing individual than those that had attempted this before.... and this could pay off in the grander scheme....
