Lions v Crusaders - Super Rugby Preview

South African Conference favourites the Lions, take on the Crusaders in Johannesburg on Sunday in what is a repeat of last year’s final.  We take a look at the game from a betting angle.

The Lions will be playing their 7th successive match and they have returned from a disappointing trip to Argentina where they were beaten 49-35 by the Jaguares.  They were previously run very close by the Sunwolves beating them 40-38 in Johannesburg despite starting 35 point favourites and the week before that they lost 38-35 to the Blues, having led comfortably at one point.  The Lions, sponsored by World Sports Betting, are still the South African Conference favourites at 5/6 – click here for outright markets but they probably couldn’t have asked for a worse opponent this week than the defending champions, the Crusaders.

The New Zealand outfit beat the Bulls 33-14 in Christchurch last week and in so doing they avoided a 3rd successive defeat having lost to the Highlanders and the Hurricanes away.  They are a side which enjoys playing rugby in South Africa and in Johannesburg in particular, having won 5 of the last 6, including last year’s final by 25-17.

The Crusaders have won 6 of their last 7 matches in South Africa with the only defeat coming to the Lions in their eliminator in 2016.  This fixture certain has the potential to be high scoring especially given the Lions defence has been below par this season.  My main bet here will probably be in the points market but for now I am more than happy to take the Crusaders -6.5 as I just don’t think this Lions side are in a good space at the moment and I also believe they may feel the effects of 7 consecutive matches.
