Quality of KZN based horses was created by Sylvester
Vernichey MR 120 ranked joint 20th
Chantyman 119
Ultra Magnus 119 ex crawford
Cartel Captain 115
Mount Laurel 114 ex alexander
Trip to Africa 114
Tristful 113
Speedpoint 110 ex ramsden
Sunset Eyes 110 ex crawford
Temptin Fate 109

These are the top 10 trained horses in KZN.

There are currently less than 40 KZN based horses rated above MR 100.

Would love to know the reason for so few top horses coming out of KZN.

Always .... has been the poor cousin.
No Oppenheimer horses. Or Slack horses.
No Drakenstein and Ridgemont horses.
No Van Niekerk horses.

Previously big industrialists like Gj Beck and L Jaffee had the bulk of their horses in Cape Town and Tvl.
Only David Payne was sent a few.

Going back in time and owners like Cyril Hurvitz, Mary and John Liley, Owner Breeders like Hartford Stud and the Ellis family, Owner Breeder George Rowles, Owner Breeder CJ Saunders , Owner Breeders Robin and Des Scott , the Passmore family, they provided the bulk of the horses in Kzn along with a host of small breeders and owners who had less than a dozen horses in training.

Not any more now.

KZn has had International owners too like Robert Sangster and the President of Chechnya among others.

The excuse about lack of buying power is nonsense. KZN owners and trainers have spent plenty money on expensive rubbish from Australia.
There are many examples of astute trainers who have done well with sensibly bought horses. The Paul Peter yard have mostly bought cheap horses and still found good ones. Glen Kotzen built his yard up in the early years by buying well.
In the 70s and 80s the strong KZN yards came and cleaned up in the CT season.
The problem, in my opinion, has been the obsession with numbers over quality in the KZN breeding ranks over the past few decades, and assisted by the subsidy for KZN breeders paid out of the stakes pot. The majority of KZN trainers mostly then bought the locally bred product, and Gold Circle pandered to the inferior population by programming more and more low grade handicaps.
One only has to look at their KZN breeders day races- mostly low division handicaps for exorbitant stakes!
Dennis Drier has been one of the few KZN trainers who did his homework at the sales and bought astutely from a wider bench, and hence has been competitive nationally.
Duncan Howells was similarly doing very well until his yard hit problems a couple of years ago,

We have had some good Aus horses here,David Payne had a few top ones.I think Paul Lafferty didn't have much luck.
No many Aus bred horses at the moment though.

The Cape breeders own every top mare in the country! Do you really think it`s the Cape run sires that are the difference? NO it`s the MARES!

If Galileo, Frankel and Pegasus were standing in KZN they wouldn`t be supported by the Cape owned mares (apart from Peter D`s)

Spot on PeterD regarding Gold Circle and KZN day races.
One merely has to look at most results and dividends. The punter is on a hiding to nothing. Form studying is a waste of time.
Todays card epitomises the punters nightmare and is surely driving the punter away.
When you get local experts like The Hawk and The Good bemoaning the quality of the fields, that speaks volumes.

There we go....
Lafferty with an Australian bred in race 2.
Did run a decent 2nd with heaps of money down.
12-1 into 28-10.
No money back from the original outlay, now costing even more money after the punt they had.
