If you were in Cape Town this past weekend, Kenilworth Racecourse was the place to be as it was transformed into an entertainment paradise for racing fans, socialites and families alike. For those in the industry, it was a welcome sight to see packed grandstands and enthusiastic crowds surrounding the parade ring and winner’s enclosure as race-goers caught a glimpse of some of South Africa’s finest equine athletes.
Apart from the amazing prawn specials, the major drawcard of today’s programme was the R1 million ARF Commemorative Gr1 Cape Derby which, much like many of the other feature races this Cape season, kept punters and race-goers on their toes right until the finish line. The 2020 edition saw a relative outsider, Golden Ducat from the Eric Sands yard, narrowly beating second placed Sachdev by half a length, giving the veteran trainer his third Cape Derby career victory.
It seems fitting that the Cape racing season was concluded with a culinary feast on course as a celebration was truly fitting for an exceptional #SeasonOfChampions. For the ARF Commemorative Cape Derby winning jockey, Craig Zackey, this has been a dream season in particular with no less than three feature winners - having also taken the winning salute in the Cape Fillies Guineas and the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
Similarly, for racing fans, it has been a season to remember - packed with on-course entertainment, competitions, prize giveaways and flattering fashion. Whilst the R99 for 25 prawns special made every race goer feel like a winner today, it was the winners of the household appliances and prizes valued at over R50 000 who truly walked away victorious.
It was a day filled with sunshine, smiles, seafood and sensational racing, the perfect recipe for a day out with family and friends. Whilst racing continues at Kenilworth Racecourse on a regular basis, the focus of the feature race season turns to Johannesburg with the SA Classic Race Day taking place at Turffontein on 7 March, incorporating the second leg of the Triple Crown Series.
