I have spent hundreds of hours researching this very subject. For the past 4 years I have been structuring my bets as follows: 2 x 4x 6 x 9
In other words my top 2 choices for 1st place, top 4 choices for 2nd etc. This works out to R144 for a full perm. I never play a quartet in a race with fewer than 12 horses. Did experiment with countless other computations but the 2x4x6x9 works best for me. Gives me a strike rate of between 25 and 30% so be prepared for long losing strings but the pay-offs can be huge. My biggest win was 44K and my longest losing string to date was 34!!!!!!!!!!. Average return on investment just over 10%. However when bets are restricted to maiden races only(my forte) ROI averages closer to 17%. This does not sound like much but with good money management and MUCH DISCIPLINE it can be very rewarding. Note: This is not to say that floating, double floating, etc. does not work. We all have different styles, likes, dislikes, skills. What works for one person may not work for another.

For those of you who are interested, I have the genie Software for Quartet Bet Structure. With this all combinations of quartets can be structured but it is NOT a method of selection.

I do the above depending on the price of the favourite and if I think it can run a place. Sometimes I've bankered the favourite for 3rd. Most often it works like a charm in UK racing. Also have bankered my fancies to run 2nd or 3rd. I only do this after I've played my quartet that I've fancied for the race which is - 2 horses by 4 horses by how many I fancy by the field.

just a suggestion BUT are you not better of looking at a quartet like you do a jackpot?

I toyed with this a few years ago but living abroad and without pictures it made it difficult to "know" horses properly.
