Condolences to his family and friends. Absolutely shocking and tragic to hear.

Just another nail in the South African coffin for me..........I love SA more than any other country in the world but it is also the toughest to live in.......

I am totally horrified at this. Mike was one of the true gentlemen of this industry. His sister Trish worked for me when I was bookmaking and yes the entire family has always been special. I don't have any contact details for Trish or any of the family members so could I ask that if any of the ABC Clan attend Mike's funeral that they pass on my condolences to everyone.

South Africa will always be home but when this happens I realise just how blessed I am to be in Singapore right now.

Mike will be missed by many.

This was posted on the site 26th March

"MIKE O CONNER A GREAT GUY WITH GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IN ALL HIS OUTLETS. THE BULLRING AT NORTHCLIFF IS GREAT WITH A GREAT BARMAN A GREAT RESTAURANT MANAGER AND AWESOME FOOD. I RECOMEND ALL LOCAL JHB GUYS GO AND VISIT. THE MONTE CASINO BRANCH IS REALLY SMALL BUT CONVENIENT AND ALSO WORTH A VISIT. THE BEST THING ABOUT THESE OUTLETS IS THAT THE STAFF ARE SUPER EFFICIENT AND ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP . PHUMELELA AND THE NHRA COULD TAKE A LESSON FROM MIKES FAMILY AND STAFF."

Heard about this tragedy from a friend on Thursday evening, but things were sketchy, word was out that a couple of armed robbers, entered and robbed Mike, and his life was taken.I cannot confirm if this is true, but none the less its tragic news, and condolences to all concerned.

Very sad indeed. Condolences to the family.

Only news report I can find is on Eye Witness News

Cops hunt for armed robbers

Eyewitness News www.eyewitnessnews.co.za/Story.aspx?Id=86007

Gauteng police are hunting for an armed gang that gunned down a Johannesburg businessman.

Top-bet SA's director Michael O'Connor was shot on Thursday evening as robbers were trying to flee one of his outlets at the Northcliff corner shopping centre.

Authorities say eight robbers had held up staff and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The police's Katlego Mogale says, “It is alleged that the suspects, who were driving in two different vehicles, entered the establishment and held the staff at gunpoint

O'Connor was also the chairman of the Gauteng Off-Course Bookmakers' Association and was well known in the industry.

I see the Star newspaper to-day mentions ABC and this column, and the details similar to Alcaponee's post above
