Fair play to you Brent.

I am an Englishman with a couple of legs and an earhole in 'Clan Classique' - so I know that websites like 'ABC', 'Kniferacers' and 'Gary Alexander's' work, as I have invested as a direct result of their exsistance!

Anything that highlights the 'value' of SA racing - 25% of UK cost for practiacally the same reward at entry level!

The main difference being at the mid-level, hence my post of the other day 'Prize Money' - although I understand that these may indeed rise in the near future = bigger 'selling' point!

GL Brett, I certainly think it's the way to go, in regard 'new ownership' - cheers, Jim.

Good stuff, Brent.

Owning a horse, how does one get involved ?

Lets face facts, our racing operator doesnt market this wonderful industry outside of its media control (in fact one of its directors has been quoted as saying, "sell your horses and buy Phumelela shares").

So the industry relies on people like yourselves and Alcaponee, websites (as mentioned by Jim) like Africanbettingclan, trainers, acquaintances/friends etc to bring new people into the game.

To get more people involved, awareness must be created and it is encumbent on RA and Gold Circle to push the corporate to spend money marketing and communicating our sport nationally and internationally, outside its media and to show good faith as regards stakes and possible returns to the owner/investor.

To get involved, one must preferably have a friend who will refer you to a trustworthy trainer, who will guide you as to sales and prices. A visit to the stables followed by a visit to the races (on a busy day preferably) should get the adrenalin going.

The spend, partners etc then come into play. With patience and correct advise, one can find a decent thoroughbred for less than 100k.

What can one afford, bearing in mind that a monthly stable fees average R4000.

For a first-time owner, unless you have big bucks, partners (also preferably friends and/or family you can trust) are advisable.

One can go sour to the game very quickly if you fall into the wrong hands, be it a trainer or partners.

Once you love the game, you will bring others in. Its like a chain-reaction.

This is very general and to many obvious but its amazing how little the general public know about racing.

Brent, will e-mail you some ideas soonest.

Well done on your endeavours.

I am happy to report that both of our local papers ran stories on Jaypegs win. The reasons they focused on Jaypeg is as I've said before a local businessman has an interest in the horse.

I will try an get circulation figures and see if I will allowed to post the articles on this site (copyright concerns)

The south Coast Herald (circulation 20 000) and the South Coast Fever (circulation of 49 000) have agreed to let me copy their reports on this forum. I will have them posted here tonight.

I did thank both editors for doing their bit for racing and complimented them on doing their jobs and reporting on a major event. I did also mention that we on the South Coast are more awake to events around us than the national media is.

I did get a response from East Coast Radio. Something about your views will be considered. I reckon its a standard mail that they reply with and my email was not even read. Not worth getting uptight about I suppose. It just gets to me that we are forced to support this station as we don't pick up 5FM in the Margate and surrounding areas. Thats my rant for the day! good punting to All

THERE”S NO PEGGING BACK THIS CLASSIC COLT

South Coasters, Paul and Cherie Loomes, are over the moon as the racehorse they co-own, Jay Peg, is making waves on the international racing scene.

The, odds were against Jaypeg last Saturday and the critics agreed.

Not only was Jay Peg racing against six other horses rated more highly, but it was also only the second time the horse had worn blinkers in a race.

However, during the last 100 metres of the 2008 Grade US$5-million Dubai Duty Free race, the one-paced racer took the lead, trouncing his opponents for a well¬ deserved win. For Paul and Cherie Loomes, it was an amazing experience that will stay with them forever.

It was absolutely fantastic," says Cherie. "The Dubai Duty Free is a most prestigious race and when our horse won we were totally blown away"

Even though Jay Peg was rated as the best three-year-old and a great favourite in South Africa last year, he was an outsider. Critics didn't think that he would do too well in the race.

Herman Brown Jnr, another co-owner of the racehorse, told the international press that before the race they would have been happy with a place. The horse started rather slowly, but after 500 metres the horse reportedly pushed for the lead. With100 metres to go it was `race over'.

"With blinkers on, Jay Peg was totally focused. He doesn't like any horse in front of him," says Cherie. "After the race, we immediately received offers from people wanting to buy the horse, but we didn't accept any of the offers. I think it was definitely the right choice”

Paul and Cherie became involved in the horse racing scene through Paul's business contacts. The couple has owned shares in Jay Peg since he was a foal.

The next step for Jay Peg may be Singapore or Hong Kong.

Thanks to the editors of the South Coast Herald who allowed me to copy the stories on the forum. Man it took long to retype.

PAUL LOOMES’ JAYPEG WINS IN DUBAI
WELL known Hibiscus Coaster Paul Loomes is over the moon be¬cause his race horse Jay Peg won the Dubai Duty Free last weekend
Jay Peg, South Africa's Cham¬pion three-year-old of the 2006¬ 2007 season, started at 50-1. Was ridden by Anton Marcus, won three million dollars in prize money, and set a course record in the process. Paul, who owns Jay Peg with three other brothers of the jockey, Basil and Selwyn Marcus, and Ettienne Braun, later told the Fever that he was over the moon. `I was there, and it was an awesome moment"
Jay Peg quickly took the lead under Anton Marcus with Floral Pegasus right behind and J. Paul Reddams Notional midfield on the rail. With the field strung out in a long line, Jay Peg held tough on the lead all the way into the stretch. But approximately 300 meters from the finish, Marcus's saddle slipped and Archipenko, Darjina, and Vodka passed Jay peg on the outside.
As Marcus tried to readjust his saddle, he urged Jay Peg to keep going, and the four-year-old Camden Park colt eagerly responded, battling back up the rail and collar-finisher Archipenko win by a half-length. Darjina finished a nose in front of third-place finisher Arkipenko.
Multiple graded stakes winner Notional weakened under Garrett Gomez and finished last in the 16 horse field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the In Excess (Ire) colt was lame in his left foreleg.
Jay Peg covered the 1,777meters (8.83 furlongs) in 1:46.20, eclipsing the previous turf course record by two hundredths of a second.
I was aware of what I had under me; how much horse I had, Marcus said. I never had a concern. Jay Pegs owners erupted in exuberance in the winners enclosure.
For the final 200 metres, the South African Owners went berserk and with leaps and hugs, tears and shouts, Etienne Braun, Paul Loomes, Basil and Selwyn Marcus, brothers of the winning jockey, celebrated.
“We were the underdog now were winning” cried Braun. “He’s never been in a race like this. This is the best moment of my life.”
Trainer Herman Brown was delighted with the victory. “this is like a dream, especially with such a bad draw (from post 14)”, he said.” For me I’ve been here before, so I take it as it comes, but for them, it’s their first experience here. This is the highlight of my career.”

Thanks to the editors at The FEVER for allowing me to copy their report on this forum.

Although both of the above stories are not completely accurate they do drive the message home and definitely do promote SA Racing. The stories were not front page news but did dominate a page all to themselves in both publications. Surely the big news boys can do the same.

I did record Super Saturday (had to work today) and I am hoping that Niel Andrews did his bit for racing on the show. It was an awesome tribute to our camps prior to the opening of the sale. Well done to whoever did that.

I am a bit confused.Horse ran in shirtliff colours.Did he sell his shares to the Loomes at the last minute. No previous mention of them in previous runs, but no mention of Shirtliff in these articles?

Interested,as I was a member of the syndicate who imported Camden Park!
