Since its the Arc on Sunday, my Throwback goes to a dual undefeated Arc winner Ribot who won the Arc in 1955 and 1956. My profile pic on ABC from the inception has been this undisputed champion. Interestingly Lester Piggot names Ribot has the second best horse he has seen race. From all the horses that I have read about Ribot has me in awe. Criquette who trains Treve, first Arc winner Three Troikas was bred by a South African Artur Pfaff in 1979. I will try to post links later, having a hectic day.

15 October 2015 Throwback

Since it is Champions Day at Newmarket this weekend, we dont go too much back to get our Throwback. In 2012, Frankel, perhaps the best horse I have witnessed to grace the turf or for anyone else that matter won the Champion Stakes on his very last racecourse experience in soft underfoot conditions beating the stalwart and now veteran top class performer, Cirrus des Aigles . Named after the late American Trainer, Bobby Frankel, Frankel was undefeated in 14 starts.

Frankel (foaled 11 February 2008) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. Frankel was unbeaten in his fourteen-race career and was the highest-rated racehorse in the world from May 2011.[2] In 2010 he defeated a field including Nathaniel and Colour Vision on his debut before winning the Royal Lodge Stakes by ten lengths and the Dewhurst Stakes in which he defeated the Middle Park Stakes winner Dream Ahead. As a three-year-old, he won the Classic 2000 Guineas by six lengths, defeated the outstanding older miler Canford Cliffs in the much-anticipated Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Frankel extended his unbeaten record in 2012 by winning the Lockinge Stakes, the Queen Anne Stakes and the Sussex Stakes for a second time. In August he was moved up to a mile and a quarter for the first time and won the International Stakes at York. In October he won the Champion Stakes at Ascot, again over a mile and a quarter, following which his retirement from racing was announced.

After his win in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October 2011, Frankel was given a rating of 143 by Timeform, the highest mark awarded by the organisation in over forty years and their fourth highest of all time behind Sea Bird, Brigadier Gerard and Tudor Minstrel.[3] In June 2012, following his win in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, Timeform raised its provisional rating to 147, making him the highest-rated horse in the organisation's history.[1] In January 2013 Timeform announced that his final rating at the end of his racing career was also 147.[4]

The World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings Committee rank Frankel as the best racehorse they have assessed since their ratings were introduced in 1977, by a margin of two points. In January 2013 they announced that their ratings had been recalibrated, since it was believed that in the early years of the scheme horses had been treated more generously than more recently. Frankel's rating was confirmed at 140, but Dancing Brave was reduced from 141 to 138, Alleged from 140 to 134 and Shergar from 140 to 136.[5]

Since 1900, of British-bred racehorses only Ribot has won more races and finished his career unbeaten (racing largely in Italy).[6] Frankel's record of nine consecutive Group 1 wins is unsurpassed and has been equalled only by the U.S.A. filly Zenyatta.[7]

Frankel's performance in the 2000 Guineas has been described as "one of the greatest displays on a British racecourse".[8] British bloodstock agency McKeever Bloodstock and Banstead Manor Stud Manager Philip Mitchell have suggested that Frankel has a valuation of £100 million, an estimate which may be "conservative".[9]

Throwback Thursday - 29 October 2015 - Zenyatta.

Since its the Breeders Cup, this weekend my Throwback goes to the brilliant mare, Zenyatta who won the Breeders Cup in 2009 and in 2010 was bidding to remain undefeated in 20 starts only to be beaten by a whisker by Blame after being quite someway off them and but bearing in mind that way they should race. After the race a very emotional Mike Smith "blamed" the defeat in himself as the mare had to much to ground to make up. Her win 2009 is posted below as well as her agonizing defeat in 2010 plus Mike Smit interview. The interview is worth a watch, the jockey was in tears.

PS..Was going to to have a Throwback on the Germiston November Handicap but now named the Charity Mile and run in October so I have omitted it.

Zenyatta (foaled April 1, 2004, in Kentucky) is a retired American champion Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of 19 consecutive races in a 20-race career. During her racing career, she stood 17.2 hands (70 inches, 178 cm) at the withers and weighed 1,217 lb (552 kg).

Owned by Jerry Moss and his wife Ann and trained by John Shirreffs, Zenyatta was ridden by jockey Mike Smith for 17 of 20 starts. David Flores rode Zenyatta in her first three starts.

Zenyatta was sired by Street Cry, who also sired 2007 Kentucky Derby-winner Street Sense, multiple Group 1 Australian Weight for Age champion Whobegotyou, and 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking. Zenyatta is out of Vertigineux, and thus is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Balance. Her damsire is the stallion Kris S.

Zenyatta was named after the album Zenyatta Mondatta, by The Police, who were signed to A&M Records by her owner, Jerry Moss.[2]
