Today is Michael Roberts raceday and a race named after him.

In the 1990s he won his own race as a jockey on a horse called Winning Purple.
In the 2000s he won his own race as a trainer on West Coast Gold.

I was on the racecourse when he won the 1997 July on Super Quality. It was the first time I saw that the crowd clapping and excited that he won the July. He got an ovation of note. At that time the July was elusive to him after numerous tries. Truly a legend. You do not win a British Jockey Championship on a platter.
