Thanks Bob, was wonderful to watch again.

Difficult to focus on day 4 after yesterday’s performance.
Might be the ARC for the champ next?

Today Art Power is all the rage in the first.
Pierre Lapin (half brother to Harry Angel) can make it 3 from 3.

I am sure we thought Ryan or Frankie would be leading jock but Jim Crowley is now 6/10 with Ryan tempting at 3/1.

Good Punting

reviews and Nap selection for Royal Ascot on Friday.

JUNE 18, 2020

Race 1: 2.15pm
ART POWER ended last year with an impressive wide-margin victory at York and made all at Newcastle on his return to action when beating a subsequent winner over five lengths. Potentially better than a handicapper, Tim Easterby’s colt should make a bold bid. Golden Dragon posted a good effort in the Cornwallis at Newmarket when last in action and makes his handicap debut along with Band Practice, a Listed winner in France and preferred to Maystar of Archie Watson’s four runners. Keep Busy is another winner at Listed level in France where he beat a below par Spartan Fighter and John Quinn’s charge also makes more appeal than Will To Win, who drops down in trip having failed in a bid for a five-timer when beaten at Lingfield. Never Dark is upped in class after scoring at Kempton and Dancin Inthestreet has a bit to prove in this grade while the returning Classy Moon is preferred to City Walk.

Race 2: 2.50pm
Flying Aletha beat an odds-on stablemate in a maiden over 1000m at Gulfstream in May and Wesley Ward’s filly will likely blaze a trail at the head of affairs. Roger Varian trained last year’s winner and Setarhe, who beat the re-opposing Cirrus at Newmarket, is preferred to Lingfield winner Undertake, while Valpolicella won a separate division of the same maiden at Headquarters and makes more appeal than Dandalla. But GOLDEN MELODY made a winning start at Haydock in taking fashion and the Haggas filly may well prove up to this level. Mother Earth, Willabell and Ventura Vision were all beaten on their respective debuts but hail from powerful yards that have all won this contest in the last eight years with a much better showing expected from the Ballydoyle filly.

Race 3: 3.25pm
EYE OF HEAVEN will prove a warm order in this having made a winning debut at Newmarket with Wednesday’s Windsor Castle winner Tactical back in third. He needed only to be pushed out by Frankie for that success and Mark Johnston’s colt gets the vote. Wesley Ward is no stranger to winning this and Gulfstream maiden winner Golden Pal should take the field along nicely while Lipizzaner has been beaten in both starts so far but Aidan O’Brien’s charge can’t be written off with any confidence. The Lir Jet was purchased by Qatar Racing after breaking the all-aged track record at Yarmouth on his debut while Get It finished fourth in the Windsor Castle a couple of days ago but was beaten by the selection before that. Newmarket runner-up Imperial Force represents the same yard as Tactical while Ventura Torment is thrown in at the deep end for his debut but is related to a host of winners including the useful sprinter George Bowen.

Race 4: 4pm
Last year’s Derby winner ANTHONY VAN DYCK may not have won since but has run well in defeat at the highest level including a second to Ghaiyyath in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket a fortnight ago. The Ballydoyle colt finished in front of last year’s winner Defoe on that occasion and will handle any cut in the ground. The latter will finish much closer today if back to his best while the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes winner Elarqam should also be in the mix though finished behind the selection in last year’s Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. Desert Encounter beat Alounak when landing the Woodbine International last season while Fanny Logan has more to prove at this level though continues to improve. Morando could only manage fourth in this last season and this is the toughest task the returning Hamish has faced so far.

Race 5: 4.35pm
Aidan O’Brien runs four with Ryan Moore partnering last year’s Group 3 winner Lope Y Fernandez, who finished a creditable third in last week’s Irish 2000 Guineas. The unexposed Mill Reef winner Pierre Lapin returns to action having only raced on fast ground so far while Golden Horde won the Richmond at Goodwood before going close in the Group 1 Middle Park in September. Frankie teams-up with Wesley Ward once again on Listed winner Kimari, a runner-up in last year’s Queen Mary here to Raffle Prize. But the latter was subsequently beaten by the impressive MILLISLE (NAP) in the Group 1 Cheveley Park at Newmarket in September and a big race is expected from Jessica Harrington’s filly returning to sprinting having failed to last home in the Irish 1000 Guineas on her recent reappearance. Wooded is a Group 3 winner for a leading French yard and there should be more to come from him this year but most of the remainder including Mums Tipple and the Godolphin colt Royal Crusade have something to find at this level.

Race 6: 5.10pm
Aidan O’Brien has won five of the last 10 renewals and complicates matters by running a couple of maiden winners in Santiago and Nobel Prize ridden by Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori respectively. The latter could have presumably ridden Yarmouth novice winner On Guard while Born With Pride and Punctuation are others raised in class. The latter’s stablemate Berkshire Rocco was second to English King in the Derby Trial at Lingfield a fortnight ago and comes into the reckoning on that form but a chance is taken on the returning AL DABARAN. A Listed winner here last year, Charlie Appleby’s charge was placed at Group 3 level on a couple of occasions subsequently and this longer trip and first-time headgear should bring further progress.

Race 7: 5.40pm
Mark Johnston sent out last year’s winner and West End Charmer shrugged off a 4.5kg rise when making a winning reappearance at Newmarket with Good Birthday back in third. He’s penalised 4lb today while Durston is 5.5kg higher than when going close at Goodwood in August with Le Don De Vie behind. El Misk ended 2019 with a convincing win at Kempton and can figure while Dal Horrisgle is another returning from an absence and is preferred to stablemate Al Muffrih. Dubai Future was placed in a Group 3 contest at Meydan when last in action while Deja was a progressive handicapper last season and the reserve Hereby has a shout if lining-up. But the less exposed MEDAL WINNER scored at Newcastle in good style on his handicap debut earlier this month and there looks plenty more to come from Archie Watson’s charge as he steps up in distance. – Sportinglife.com

Views from connections ahead of Friday’s feature races at Royal Ascot.

JUNE 18, 2020
2.50pm Albany Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3)
Wesley Ward – Flying Aletha
“I see she’s favourite on the books and she is a filly with true quality – she’s not just a fast filly, which is why we think she can stretch out a little further. She did some eye-opening breezes prior to her first run. She ended up running on the dirt because the turf races were cancelled and still won really well, even though she’s a turf horse rather than a dirt horse.
“She isn’t a big, robust filly. She’s quite light and frail, which is keeping me a little grounded about her chances, but I’m still hopeful she’ll run a big race. If the race was in the States, I’d be a lot more confident.”

William Haggas – Golden Melody
“We’re all in the dark with the two-year-olds really, because we don’t really know how good they are. We think she’s a nice filly, and a bit of cut in the ground will suit her.”

Karl Burke – Dandalla
“She looks fantastic. It was a toss up between five and six (furlongs). On pedigree she’ll stay a mile – so with Aidan (O’Brien) having what looks a speedball (More Beautiful) in the Queen Mary, we decided to duck that one.
“She goes to the Albany with some sort of chance. It was a good run at Newcastle.
“I declared her for the Queen Mary as well just in case the ground went very heavy and we might switch, but as long as it’s no worse than good to soft we”ll stick to six for the Albany.”

3.25pm Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)
Wesley Ward – Golden Pal
“We tried our best to persuade Frankie to ride. I know he really likes Mark Johnston’s colt, but in my opinion Golden Pal gives us our best chance of a winner at Royal Ascot this year. If all my horses running at Royal Ascot this year were to run against each other over five eighths of a mile, this guy would beat them all – he’s unbelievably fast.
“We had to run him on the dirt first time, because there were no turf races to run in. The jockey gave him a slap down the shoulder early in the race, and he just took off and ended up eight or 10 lengths clear. He was game when the other horse came to him- but the pace he went early on, no horse in America would have been able to keep that up, let alone a two-year-old.
“Ever since then I’ve been preparing him for the Norfolk – and here we are. I really think he is one of the best horses I’ve ever brought to Royal Ascot – believe me, this horse is the real deal.”

4pm Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)
Charlie Johnston – Elarqam
“(Owner) Sheikh Hamdan (Al Maktoum) left it in our hands to make the decision (this race or Prince of Wales’s) – and we felt it was the right race. We’re not ruling out going back to a mile and a quarter, and his big midsummer target will be the Juddmonte at York – a track at which he goes so well.
“In the short-term, though, we’re interested to try a mile and a half because there are signs he could improve for it – and if he does it opens up a lot more doors going forwards. He will improve a little for Haydock. He was built up in March and then again in May, so he’d done plenty of home work before Haydock.
“But like in that race, he’s not exuberant – he only does what he has to do, he’s quite laid back.”

William Haggas – Hamish
“It’s the first run of the year for him, but he is in cracking form. It’s a tough place to start. But we have to start somewhere, and opportunities are limited, so we thought it was worth giving it a go.”

4.35pm Commonwealth Cup (Group 1)
Wesley Ward – Kimari
“She might have won at Royal Ascot last year but for Frankie – if you can’t beat ’em join ’em! Not all my horses do well from two to three, but she really has, which is why we’re bringing her back.
“My team tell me she is in really good form. Kieren Fallon has been riding my horses in Newmarket, and out of them all she is his pick for the week. It would be fantastic if she can go one better than last year.”

Roger Varian – Pierre Lapin
“We felt it was a bit tight running in the Pavilion at Newcastle (on June 4) beforehand and liked the idea of getting him to Ascot as a fresh horse. We’d have loved to have got a prep run into him in May, but he’s not a horse I wanted to go ‘bang-bang’ with, and so we took the decision to try and get him cherry-ripe for Ascot.
“He’s probably got to overcome a little bit of inexperience, but he is a very natural horse and he won in Group company after a four-month lay-off on only his second start. Hopefully, his ability will shine through and he will be streetwise enough for the big day. He’s got to prove himself at the top level but he’s got the gears, definitely, and I think he now has the strength.”

Clive Cox – Golden Horde
“He has done very well over the winter after a terrific two-year-old campaign. He carries a real level of form into the race, and I believe he’s done as well as any horse possibly could from two to three.
“With the sprinting brigade, in particular, it’s all about maturity and strength. Once you’ve got that natural speed and ability, maturity is the curve you hope and pray continues upwards – and for me, he has matured as much as he possibly could since last year. I’m hoping we go there with a good chance.”

Karl Burke – Dubai Station
“He would probably cope with a bit of juice in the ground, but I wouldn’t want it deep. I think they are underestimating his run at Newcastle. He travels very strongly and has a good turn of foot. I’m very happy with his condition. He looks fantastic.”

5.10pm Queen’s Vase (Group 2)
William Haggas – Born With Pride
“We just felt the ground might not be soft enough in the Ribblesdale and we thought we’d wait until later in the week with some rain forecast. Her debut form looks very good now, obviously, but that was a long time ago.
“I think she’ll get the trip all right – she might even want it.” – Sportinglife.com

Thanks to Stradivarius breaking the ice, Mac’s Royal Ascot Gr1 performance is now 1 from 3.

For today Golden Horde is easy to back. Prosperous punting.
