Jozi Family get a R14m Electric Bill
10 years 1 week ago
A Craighall family was left shocked after reportedly receiving a R14-million electricity bill.
According to The Star, Mark Kyle said he always paid the electricity bill on time, but ended up being cut off, with no warning letter being sent to them.
Kyle went to a service centre in Randburg, where he was told that his family was in arrears and that a technician would be sent to reconnect the electricity supply.
No-one visited the family, leaving them without power for two weeks.
"The walk-in centre staff were at a complete loss to explain why we had been disconnected, citing an outstanding payment for R14 199 752, but still we waited for reconnection. No matter how many people I spoke to, no one could explain where this figure came from. There were lots of helpless shrugs all around," Kyle was quoted as saying by The Star.
However, after reconciliation, Kyle found that he actually was in credit to the tune of R3353.
Kyle pointed to the household's smart meter as a possible culprit.
"It seems it was never connected to the database at the council to pick up the readings - hence the estimates, but how they got to R14m is unbelievable."
The City of Joburg has confirmed that the bill has been corrected and the family has been reconnected.

It took me 6 months to convince them that unit 1 and unit 2 were switched over in our duets you can't comprehend the documentation required and the lack of understanding with the numerous staff I dealt with and I was requesting to pay the larger bill as opposed to the single lady next door!
