very sad news and condolences to the family..a great trainer and what he did with al nitak was unbelievable...did not know him on a personal level but i admire the way he went about his job and was always very humble when he was interviewed..he never liked to take the credit for his achievements...rest in peace buddy maroun

Just shocking that a man of this calibre has to die in such a terrible way. Just shows you, every day could be our last. Let's celebrate the great man for who he was and I agree, keep the pressure on authorities for a museum to preserve people like Buddy Maround for future generations.

My sincere condolences to his family as well.Sad though that he had to pass on in a foreign country.

My first encounter with the Maroun name was with a sprint horse called Huntersvlei.Anyone know if he trained it?

hope that memorial race becomes a reality

Doyen, Huntersvlei was trained by Buddy's father, Robert.

Buddy Maroun was quite simply one of a kind. He was a terrific horseman, a workaholic, and a great trainer (and not just of sprinters). He shunned the limelight, and stayed well away from the messy politics of racing, preferring to be with his horses as much as possible. To Buddy it was always, first and foremost, about the horses.

He will be greatly missed.
