Jockey Earnings

Was just checking out the Jockey Log on ABC homepage and did a quick calculation on Mark Khans stats.

From the 1/09/2007 to the 19/02/2008 .

Mark Khan has had 409 rides with 105 wins . Lets leave the placings out.

If he gets R500 per ride , he has earned R204000.00 thus far with a expected income of R30000.00 per month.

This excludes % of stakes for his 105 winners.

Richard Fourie on a average of R40k per month.

No bad at all. This can become quiet lucrative . I think I'm in the wrong line of work.

Damn they make a decent living and here I am feeling sorry for talented jockeys like S Khumalo who makes on average R24k per month.

I can imagine what Dougie and Felix make in a month.

Just remember you are only working on official earnings El lets not forget "presents" etc (use your imagination) and you can see that many off the top jocks could actually ride for free and still make top dollar- the flip side is the danger and stress and dieting (not to mention the poor social life if you really want to make it nowdays) and traveling - so i guess they deserve the cash they get

Without a doubt Mr H . I excluded % in stakes if they win .

I also know it must be hard work. Waking up eary, riding work, flying around he country. They deserve the moola.

How do you think the Casinos make money? - close down racing and they'll lose some of their big (or should that be small) punters

- sometimes the owner pays if he wants them other times the jock foots the bill and that's why you find guys raiding for a short while and if they are not having enough winners they give it a miss - i'm not saying it's a life of pure luxury but the top guys do very well and some guys just have plain bad luck - Figgs, Bonham Mj odendaal to name a few
