Two runners have been added to the nominations for each of the Grade 1 SA Classic and SA Fillies Classic fields to be run at Turffontein on Saturday 5 April.
Herod The Great and Huckleberry are supplementary entries into the R1.2 million SA Classic over 1800m on the standside track while Rat Burana and Tarbrush join the entries into the R1 million SA Fillies Classic over the same distance.
Herod The Great is trained by Ormond Ferraris and showed his ability last Saturday when beating Kings Gambit, who finished fifth in the recent Gauteng Guineas, over 1800m on the inside track.
Eastern Cape champion trainer Gavin Smith has added both Huckleberry and Tarbrush to their respective races. Huckleberry, winner of the Guineas Plate at Arlington, has run 10 times for four wins and three places.
American-bred Tarbrush has run five times for three wins and a place. Her only unplaced effort was behind Captain’s Lover at Kenilworth, where she contested the Grade 2 Odessa Stud Fillies Championship.
The inclusion of Mike de Kock’s Rat Burana in the SA Fillies Classic, however, is sure to change the complexion of the race. The Brazilian-bred filly, named two-year-old filly of the year at last season’s Equus Awards, was unbeaten as a juvenile and has only had three runs this season. She was desperately unlucky to lose the Grade 1 Empress Club Stakes earlier this month when beaten a head by Stratos over 1600m at the course and she is almost certain to be priced up favourite for the SA Fillies Classic.
There were no supplementary entries for the third Grade 1 race to be run on 5 April, the Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m.
Final declarations are by 11am on Thursday 27 March 2008.
