MERIT RATINGS.-Abilty or Current form ratings

Recently I've noticed that many horses have their M.R.'s adjusted after almost every race they run. Surely a horse's ability does not fluctuate like that!

Why are the handicappers doing that?

An example is the ratings of Lady Bonzer on todays card.

Surely this practise is more indicative of ascertainng current form ratings than true ability ratings.

I agree look at at Young Foveros. Looses lengths at 3 starts and still runs well and no adjustment then wins by 3 and a bit abd gets smashed with a heavy merit rate increase. Surely the rating should have increased gradually considering the horese ran well even though it lost lengths in previous races. Lady Bonzer's penalty not as hefty. I like Lady Bonzer to win this.
