Racing will miss Laurie Jaffee who (with his wife) has my vote as CHAMPION OWNER for the past 25 years. Over and above his long service to horse-racing in SA he contributed to the turf for our pleasure:

IN CAMERA
PRONTISSIMO
CROWN AGENT
PETRAVA (dam of Jallad)
LORD RANDOLPH (champion)
POTOMAC
BUSH TELEGRAPH (champion, sire of London News)
MARK ANTHONY (star)
CASTLE WALK
ILUSTRADOR (champion)
JALLAD (champion sire!)
EMPRESS CLUB (champion, one of the best ever)
LONDON NEWS (brought life back to SA racing)
HOEBERG
HANCOCK PARK
ARCTIC COVE (Met)

amoung many more than memory serves now.

A gentleman. Condolences to his family.

Methinks he was an honourable gentleman.
The sort of person I would have loved to have met.
Condolences.

He also had a great sense of humour, I remember being at an awards dinner "the year of Divine Act"? and he was making a speech and said "I would like to thank the Stewards" and you could see the top table starting to push out their chests and he quickly added "not you bunch, the BAR Stewards", he then went on to tell the origin of the "Empress Club".

Morning

Indeed sad news, condolences to his family.

on a slightly linked story and because Manne is the talk of the town. Myself , and some boys from JHB were involved in a certain horse being punted first time out on fine day at Kenilworth (could be corrected)

7/1 into evens
ridden by Andrew Fortune
Owned BY Mr Jaffee
Ran Second
Stiff

Trojan Hero was the name oh the memories!!!! one of the few ridden by the Candy Man that got beat when they should have won

My condolences to his family.
Of all he owned,i'm sure he was really proud of London News.
Remember one interview on TT about a syndicate consisting over 200members,he said 'didnt know which part of the horse i owned'.
He was also the 1st owner that got to sing live on winning interview in SA!

He sang when his horse I’ve Got Rhythm won.

Never knew him personally but one of the doyens of SA racing over the years. Whenever I saw his colours I always knew the jocks were trying for their lives. Had many winning punts on his horses over the years.

I think he was a great example to anyone involved in SA racing.

Hopefully we can see that interview when he was singing in the winning box ( missed it the 1st time )...undoubtedly Andrew Bonn or Jimmy L will do a full length documentary highlighting Mr & Mrs. Jaffees successes over the years.... perhaps it will even be flighted this coming Monday night.
