When taking a Yankee bet can you include a horse to place as well ?

You should take an each way yankee..so a 10 straight win yankee would cost 110 and the same choice but as an each way costs 220. A much better bet because how mny times have you one or two winners and the other two are placed. More than often one can gets ones stake back at least.

Or alternatively, do 6 x R20 win double's + 4 R10 e/w trebles + R10 e/w acca
for the same cost of R220.

So if you catch 2 winners - better payout - against nothing, if only 2 places - however 2 x 5/1 places will only net you R40 (1/5th odds), so a better bet in my opinion, unless you play big outsiders (16/1+).
