a drop of 600 horses over 6 years might not be that many but it sure must impact on trainers and others who depend on race horse for their lively hood.

1400 less horses raced last season that a few seasons back.
that is as much as a 168 million rand less in Training fees. per annum
that is 300 - 500 less Grooms about 36 million in groom salaries lost.per annum

lets see in 2 years time - Breeders will cull many mares and also there will be an even bigger drop in ownership should the wheels of justice turn on some owners mentioned in the Zondo commission

Throw in the financial effect of Covid 19 and the drop will be very significant.

The Japs appear to be on the upswing as far as quality.

......the Japanese have been pumping up their game for decades.....but only in recent years have really showcased on the international stage....20 years ago I was watching Japanese racing over the July weekend from a Tokyo hotel room the year Dynasty won....they were very quick to invest in quality breeding stock way back before the millennium and not shy to spend... and now have a thriving industry....:whistle:

The amount of horses running is a problem but the bigger problem which will be difficult to address or even solve is the amount of owners and trainers lost to Racing - You can always import Argentine or Australian horses if you have an ownership base that is growing but you cannot import owners to buy up surplus foals at sales hence the smaller breeders closing shop and big breeders culling mares or racing more stock themselves than is financially viable - When the drug dealer has to use his own product to keep the addicts high then a trip on the Titanic is not far off.

.....yeah... look whats happing at Ngong....1 sale 1 sire and no shillings to even import our cheaper surplus.....:blink:
