4Racing and SABC Sport launch new Racing Today horseracing magazine show

29 July 2022

4Racing and SABC Sport have partnered on a new daily lifestyle magazine show, Racing Today, which will bring the dynamic world of horseracing to a whole new audience.

Racing Today is centred around the beauty, power, elegance and speed of the sport’s thoroughbred horses - and the passion that is at the heart of the horseracing industry. The half-hour show, to be hosted by popular broadcaster Luthando ‘LootLove’ Shosha and presenter Benni Langa, will launch on Monday 1 August 2022 and will be broadcast daily from Monday to Friday at 17h00 on SABC Sport.

The vibey, youthful and energetic show is aimed at providing horseracing edu-tainment for those punters already familiar with the sport of horseracing and to introduce brand new audiences to the history, culture, traditions and characters of the sport.

Racing Today will be broadcast on SABC Sport’s 24 hour Sports Channel on the SABC’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Channel 4, on the Openview set-top-box where it has become one of the most watched channels on Openview 124, as well as on the TelkomONE mobile streaming platform.

Broadcast in studio and on location around the country, Racing Today will give SABC Sport viewers a front row seat into the world of horseracing and encourage a love of the sport with a new generation of racegoers. It will feature studio interviews and live discussions with industry experts, as well as lifestyle shoots on location with owners, trainers, jockeys and punters at the racecourses to give greater insight into the industry’s key role players.

“We are very excited about partnering with the SABC on the launch of Racing Today, which gives us a platform to educate and entertain a new audience and stimulate fresh interest in the wonderful sport of horseracing. The show will provide content that will engage and connect with existing punters, while also introducing the beauty and thrill of the sport to new SABC viewers and we’re excited about Racing Today’s potential to reach large new markets and contribute to the growth of the horseracing industry,” said 4Racing Chief Executive Officer, Fundi Sithebe.

SABC Head of Sport, Gary Rathbone, was very excited about the launch of Racing Today, saying it would complement the partnership with 4Racing to broadcast ten premier South African race days on SABC, which has seen the long overdue return of South African horseracing to the public broadcaster’s screens.

“It has been great to see South African horse racing getting back up to speed again after the sport saw a dramatic downturn during the Covid lockdown years. And it’s great to once again see it back on the SABC and that we are now able to follow up our live Saturday afternoon coverage of some of SA’s premier races on SABC 3 with a great new daily horse racing show, Racing Today. Once again, SABC Sport has shown that it can and will cater for a wide range of South African sporting interests and we know that fans of the ‘sport of kings’ will enjoy the access and insight we will deliver with Racing Today,” said Rathbone.

The show will also tap into the knowledge and experience of horseracing veterans like Nico Kritsiotis, James Goodman and Andrew Bon to give insight into what makes the sport tick and sets the pulses racing.

Racing Today will feature games and quizzes geared at enhancing knowledge of the sport and encouraging attendance at the country’s race days and creating a loyal following through sparking an interest in the sport and piquing the curiosity of viewers.

Is this show on SABC part of the "daily 30-minute horse racing talk show called ‘Racing Today’ on SABC Sport" as was announced on 26 February 2022?

Any feedback from SABC viewers on the initiative below regarding the production, content and promotion of the sport?

"SABC and 4Racing sign major horseracing broadcast deal for daily talk show and premier live race days

Johannesburg, 26 February 2022

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and 4Racing have signed a major agreement to ensure the sport of horseracing is again accessible and available to the broader South African public on free-to-air television.

The agreement will see 4Racing produce and broadcast a daily 30-minute horse racing talk show called ‘Racing Today’ on SABC Sport from Monday to Friday over a three-year period for 50 weeks a year."

Hi ABC Bloggers

Please get involved and help us Shape this Show.

I am sure you will all agree that having a daily talkshow on SABC Sport, Monday to Friday, is a great opportunity for Racing to capture a new audience and build on the sports following. At the same time, a live daily talk show is a content hungry beast!

Please engage and lets us know what you would like to see covered on this show. Keep the recommendations coming - content currency will be important, we can be agile to ensure we cover current issues within the appropriate show segments. Weighted to Win is our tipping show, so we will not be overlapping too much with this.

The show will take its lead from audience ratings and feedback from SABC, all viewers and our racing stakeholders. Finding the balance between a racing purist show and covering the sporting & lifestyle elements will be key too.

If you miss the broadcasts, the Episodes will be available on both www.TelkomOne.tv and 4Racing.tv post live broadcast.

Many thanks

Sounds great, if you have Open View. The non streaming punter uses multichoice to watch racing.
Perhaps the target audience for the show are the newbies and not the seasoned punters ?

Mr. Watson,

From a pure economics, business, finance, leadership and let’s not forget a racing perspective, I believe your are barking up the wrong tree. One would have expected you to have told us about your plans and product for this show before appealing for survival.

If you are running a business and you don’t have a product with a value proposition that is compelling, you should close shop. Asking your customers / potential customers to provide you with solutions in the form of content, confirms that you heading down the wrong course.

I don’t think the late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer or Harry asked their customers what is it that should I deliver to you to build a successful business. You exist in your position, compliments to the uncanny business acumen of these doyens who sponsor your existence. You ought to do better than this plea.

If provided with the following suggestions, do you call the shots or will your principals block you from covering these topics. Here’s the challenge:

1) Interview the Hollywoodbets team, Owen, Dev, Carol, Basil, Dermott and other as to why they stepped up and saved South African racing with a proper injection of cash and innovation. Also, how is it that they wow the racing public?
2) Interview the World Sports Betting Warren, Ryno and others as to why they stepped up and saved South African racing with a proper injection of cash and innovation. Why is WSB still involved in Horseracing when 4Racing tried to outmuscle WSN and Gold Circle in Feb 2022 from the industry;
3) TIP FOR FREE: Don’t interview Savage, Fundi and others that have no clue why they do what they do! This is lame and can in no way promote the industry
4) Interview the Drakenstein team and their formula for success in everything they do in Horseracing;
5) Interview the Gold Circle Team to promote the operator with the most successful product with and racing programme that the racing public looks forward to annually.

I did not watch last night's show so difficult to comment.

I find the best way forward is racehorse ownership.
It's difficult to sell due to the current financial model stakes vs keep but if more sponsorship and higher stakes were on offer it would certainly generate more support for the game.

This should not been done at the top end with inflated high price horses and high commissions to load the experience.
These owners will always be in the game where cost is not the factor but success is the mission.

The man in the street market is where the focus should be.

More to follow just have to do a school drop .

..... ....missed it....my dog took me on a longer afternoon walk....but rushed back and flicked through the few SABC channels on the FTA platform.....and did not find it....later saw that it was aired on the sports channel which is not grouped anywhere near any of the other SABC channels....

....I have only recently hooked up to FTA mainly for the SABC news in the mornings and because I have had several decoders donated to me over 2 years ago when I binned DSTV....:S

Now I will try to get back in time today to watch this content but have the following comment....

Who would one expect be watching a sport progamme at 5PM on a weekday afternoon... .

weekly 4 person competition giveaway to a Raceday in the winner's region with meal and betting vouchers and betting Buddy should be the norm. Follow up with interviews and visuals of the winner's experience of Racing aired later.
