Vaal Classic Thursday 8 June 2023 – Comments by David Thiselton

RACE 1

Preview: THE FRONT LINE (6) ran on well from behind on debut in a fair race and from a plum draw should be involved. MAJESTIC TOUCH (4) was backed on debut and was taken out when staying on so should have come on from the run and with better luck can be right there. JORDAN (3) is by Silvano and is a half-brother to the fair middle distance sort Evening Primrose (Flower Alley). MUTARAZI (5) has not been disgraced against good types in both starts and has an easier task here from a fair draw. HERE WITH ME (2) ran a fair race last time out and should enjoy the step up in trip. (David Thiselton 6-4-5-3-2)

RACE 2

Preview ALESIA’S LOVE (1) made a good debut over the too sharp 1160m and over a step up in trip she will appreciate she has pole position. IVY LEAGUE (3) was staying on strongly last time over 1160m and finished just behind Alesia’s Love and should also enjoy the step up in trip. SHILPA’S MOON (9) caught the eye with a late surge last time over 1600m and is on the up but does have a tricky draw. DAKOTA CAT (2) can be in the shake up if repeating either of her last two runs around the turn and she has a plum draw. WOODLAND GLADE (11) was beaten by Shilpa’s Moon last time but had beaten her before that so can earn. (David Thiselton 1-3-9-2-11)

RACE 3

Preview: WE ARE THE LOGANS (12) has run well in his last two including going close over this trip last time and can win this even though widely drawn., HOLOCENE (9) ran well in a fair race over this trip last time and will be a big threat. ARCHIMIDES (1) has a couple of lengths to make up on We Are The Logans on 1450m form but will need to improve on his last run. (David Thiselton 12-9-1)

RACE 4

Preview: DIESEL AND DUST (7) proved his class last time and this impressive specimen is quite well handicapped here on that run and has pole position. VANDERBILT (1) is always dangerous from the front and this is his probable best trip. DUKE OF SUSSEX (4) has class and has a fair draw for a change over a suitable trip. (David Thiselton 7-1-4)

RACE 5

Preview TIZONA (1) has won both of his starts on the Highveld for this yard and the form of his last win has worked out well so he has a shout here again. TIRPITZ (6) has an eight point raise to overcome for his last win but the form has worked out well and from a fair draw he should be right there. LORD VARYS (9) has good form over this trip and won with first time blinkers on over 1600m so should be in the shake up from a fair draw. (David Thiselton 1-6-9)

RACE 6

Preview: AXEL COLLINS (10) is 5kg better off with Captain Dizzy for a 1,50 length beating so should go close. CAPTAIN DIZZY (1) has won three on the trot and should continue to progress. WHAT A HONEY (2) has a lot of ability and could be a factor in her third run after a layoff. (David Thiselton 10-1-2)

RACE 7

Preview: WHATYOUWAITINGFOR (2) has a good draw and should enjoy the step back up to this trip. FUR BABY (5) has been thereabouts lately and the form of her last start has worked out well but she does have a tricky draw. BATIK (11) beat Fur Baby comfortably the last time they met over this trip but his last two runs were not as good. (David Thiselton 2-5-11)

RACE 8

Preview: MABONENG (8 ) disappointed last time but wasn’t disgraced and from pole position over an ideal trip looks the one to beat. FASINADA (11) has a good draw and is off a competitive mark. SPEECHMAKER (7) bounced back to form last time with a win in KZN on the poly and over a suitable trip can be involved off a mark three points higher than her last Highveld winning mark. (David Thiselton 8-11-7)

Some very competitive handicaps - We Are The Logans probably best bet on the card (and he is drawn at 6 - this is Gauteng :) ) but for the rest it is not easy; I did like the form of Mo the Man and from a good draw, I think he is good value at the odds
