It states 

Every rand spent is another point on the Leaderboard, and brings you one step closer to the VIP Experience on offer. 

So can one only earn points by placing bets .... so if you spend 50k but do not win anything , you will probably win the competition but lose overallI  .... I don't understand

It's like a reward for regular players, so the highest 8 will receive the trips, a bit like how slots and poker rake leaderboards are calculated
