Tramadol drove me round the bend ffs, who ever's idea in that yard to give a horse tramadol is a devil!!!!
The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms a Prohibited Substance finding.
The presence of O-Desmethyltramadol, a synthetic opioid analgesic classified as a Class 2 prohibited substance, was disclosed upon analysis of a specimen taken from ROYAL KINGDOM after the running of Race 3 at Fairview Racecourse on 23 May 2025.
The Trainer responsible, Miss K Mitchley, exercised her rights in terms of the Rules and requested that the reference specimen be sent to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Laboratory for confirmatory analysis. The NHA subsequently received written confirmation from the HKJC Laboratory that the specimen was analysed and the prohibited substance, O-Desmethyltramadol, was present, unequivocally confirming the NHA Laboratory’s initial findings.
O-Desmethyltramadol is the primary active metabolite of tramadol. It exerts more potent effects at the µ-opioid receptor than tramadol itself and is responsible for much of tramadol’s pain-relieving action. Tramadol and its metabolites have limited legitimate use in horses due to variable oral bioavailability and concerns over safety and efficacy. O-Desmethyltramadol is considered a prohibited substance because of its potential to alter pain perception and performance.
Miss Mitchley elected to sign an Admission of Guilt for a contravention of Rule 73.2.4 and the minimum penalty of a fine of R250 000 was imposed.
Furthermore, ROYAL KINGDOM is accordingly disqualified from the race in terms of Rule 72.3.2.
In determining the above penalty, careful consideration was given to the class of substance involved, the Trainer’s record of prior prohibited substance contraventions within the past five years, the concentration of the substance detected in the specimen, the status of the race, whether there was adequate compliance with the Veterinary Treatment Register (VTR) and the outcome of the investigation.

Re: Disgusting... Why just a fine? Ban them!

Very suspect trainer this Miss Kelly Mitchley.
Fined for lying about giving her horses African sickness vaccine.
And an investigation opened into the amount of her horses suffering from epistaxis.
And now this....
Lovely fine of R250 000 imposed

When are we getting bans...even for 6 months for heavy doping like this....anybody that's had tramadol knows you don't want exercise on that...I hated being on that stuff for just a few days so forcing an animal to take it for the punt is sick

Even if the NHA haven't got the balls to ban her, remember Paul Peter gave steroids to his horses and still was allowed to carry on training, owners will hopefully not send her their horses to train and she has to pack it in.
And she even had the guts to make them send the specimens to HK to make sure they where positive.

Every positive the groom gets blamed for going for a piss( not just in South Africa )
Have you never been working and fancied just pissing in the corner of your office?

Hi Bob...I've not been to a stable for 15 years but I promise you watching work you will often see groom's with a joint in the mouth(or tabaco)...and randomly pissing against trees or grass...Ive even seen jocks and trainers and owners do it as it's often a mission to get from the tracks back to the yard just to have a piss..now do horses like the taste of pissed on grass? That's another story...

Question to ask... Why are there not any positives for Cannabis and weed? Seemingly easier to trace than most drugs and widely used by grooms and owners etc
