Β
THE PASSING OF TRAINER JANNIE BORMAN
Johannesburg, South Africa β It is with sadness that 4Racing reports the passing of Vaal-based trainer, Jannie Borman on Saturday, 4 April 2026.
Jannie started working with racehorses as a teenager, alongside his stepfather, Henry Sham, on a farm in Postmasburg. Sham raced in Kimberley and Bloemfontein and made occasional raids to the Highveld. Jannie took out a license in his own right in 1997, originally training in Bloemfontein with support from names like Stefaan Botha and Faan Mynhardt. He moved to Kimberley in 2005 and enjoyed regular success at the Northern Cape venue.
With the closure of Flamingo Park in late 2020, he relocated to the Vaal. The move, compounded by the Covid epidemic, resulted in his string being reduced to small numbers, but he loved his horses and had a reputation for being able to turn around difficult individuals and bring the best out of moderate runners. He remained optimistic for the future and was a respected and well liked member of the Vaal trainer base. His presence will be missed.
It is sad to lose a member of the racing community in such tragic circumstances, but 4Racing trusts and supports the legal process and will support authorities in any way possible.
