An elite unit of South Africa's police has raided the Johannesburg home of the speaker of parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, over corruption allegations. She has been accused of soliciting bribes in return for awarding contracts when she served as defence minister."The Speaker steadfastly upholds her strong conviction of innocence," said a statement from parliament. The police unit was acting on behalf of state prosecutors who have been carrying out an investigation. The statement from parliament said that the police "conducted a search and seizure procedure" at Ms Mapisa-Nqakula's residence, adding that she "welcomed the investigators into her home, co-operating fully" during the five-hour search. The 67-year-old veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle became speaker in 2021. Before that, she served as defence minister for seven years.During her time in that post, Ms Mapisa-Nqakula allegedly made several demands for money, amounting to $120,000 (£96,000), from the owner of a company to secure a tender to transport army equipment back to South Africa from elsewhere on the continent,  the Business Day newspaper reports .Cyril Ramaphosa became president in 2018 on a pledge to tackle corruption in the country. His predecessor, Jacob Zuma, was accused of overseeing a huge effort to divert state resources, charges he denies.Ms Mapisa-Nqakula herself believes that "corruption poses a significant threat to the principles of democracy and good governance", parliament said."Therefore, she is profoundly disturbed by such allegations."In a brief statement, the National Prosecuting Authority confirmed the search operation, but gave no other details and did not say when or whether any charges would be brought.

its pretty simple. we had a commission of enquiry at massive cost. 95 ( think could be a few more) anc members implicated in state capture based on evidence collected by the zondo team handed over to the president in june 2022 appear on the election list and a total of 3 THREE are disqualified as not suitable. despite being handed a virtual docket to charge these anc cadres nothing has been done in 18 months and they just carry on as before. so much for renewal and accountability. if ramaphose lacks the political will to prosecute his cadres we are never going to sort out corruption in this country. we need to stop complaining accept we live in a banana republic and embrace it - make the best of it or pack for perth. im too young (62) and poor to retire so i have to plug away for another 10 years but my son has already gone and my daughter plans to. the problem is when you break something properly you actually have to start again from scratch. the whole country is broken eskom water roads ports health justice education you name it - except sars ( amazing how these people can make something work when they want to ) and it is too expensive to fix , so here we are ,in africa. embrace it or go.

Cyril the Squirrel was a weak attempt to put lipstick (credibility) on the pig (ANC) firmly gorging at the taxpayer trough...but remember that ANC deployment during Numba One's term was under his watch as Deputy...the PPE corruption was solely during his term, Phala Phala was solely during his term, the collapse of Transnet during his term, the Eskom war room was headed by him, etc...

And anyone remember the Travelgate affair? How many are still in Parliament?

I think the simplest way to highlight the theft is to know that our public debt (borrowings to fund budget deficits) has gone from about R 400 billion in 1994 to over R5 trillion now...interest on debt is approaching R400 billion a year with about R300 billion of the debt needing to be repaid in the next 3 years or rolled over...and what do we have to show for the debt taken on? No electricity, intermittent water, damaged roads, over 30 million (half the official population) dependent on the state through social welfare (include those that get the R350 grant) and public sector employment...

Cry, the beloved country...
