Re: BETWAY SUMMER CUP DAY SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER
4 months 2 weeks agoI believe that on GREG BORTZ XMAS list this year, is a wish to fly into JOSIE, do a bit of HIT & RUN, clear the 3,5 MILL
off the table & head back to HOLLYWOOD BETS LAND. I don't believe he needs the money - but I'm sure he'd luv to WIN the
richest race in AFRICA ( especially taking from TAB4 RACING - no malice intended here , they are the opposition - just maybe on his BUCKET LIST )
SO OTTO LUYKEN it's all up to u, u had a fair prep run on a distance short of your best.. JP / WINX v.d. merwe is riding like a man possessed ( plus he was ROBBED of a group race last weekend )
So come on JP / OTTO & GREG come & clean up in Josie...... by the way 16, or 17 / 1 not a bad price either !!
.....most of his horses have certainly turned the corner....and I have touted Otto Luyken ever since the Crawford clan added headgear....his run on July day was workman like and although under done this effort places him in top company....big chance in the sticky conditions today.....

So the day has arrived - and the organisers will be happy that partly cloudy conditions are likely - I see the track condition is posted as 'good to soft' - I would be guessing that it turns out on the softer side - and showers predicted during the day.
Some thoughts .... but plenty of surpises in the offing as many runners would be short of work in the last week ...
R1: Obviously a guessing game
R2: Not a lot between exposed runners Tintin, Splittheeights and Witch Hazel, while Magic Carpet Ride was beaten a short-head last time; then we have the first-timer Proper who has Fourie on board; I am tentatively going for Witch Hazel as result of the 'female jock' claiming 1,5 kgs
R3: As per many races, this seems closely matched - imo it would depend on luck in running - I am going for Pressonregardless who seems to have a lot in his favour
R4: Many chances including Mina Moo, Rodeo Drive and Rachel Wall; I sort of took a guess that the draw would favour Chrome Tourmaline, but Mina Moo has an obvious chance should the 1 draw not be that bad ....
R5: As per the betting, wide open; I thought that Fire 'n Flame would have as good a chance as many
R6: Again a wide open race; Truth obvious claims while it is strange that Fourie takes the ride on Pistol Pete in preference to the Greeff stable; I thik that perhaps United Offer would get the 1600 from a fair draw
R7: Dingaans with some interesting 3-yr olds; obviously Jan van Goyen has beaten most of these, but the question would be if he is using this run to prepare for the Cape Guineas; Trust (will he stay ?) and Tin Pan Alley are the obvious ones should JvG not be as sharp as needed; this does seem less competitive than most of the races, with imo only Chronicle King, Zalatoris and Shadowfax capable of winning on form - Whispering Death might be worth another chance, but he disappointed badly after a rest
R8: Wide open again; will The Equator be good enough ? King Pelles dangerous, but even though he finished strong over 1600, I have an inkling that he might need further; Atticus Finch in the form of his life, but this is a Handicap where he carries top weight; others with chances include Madison Valley, On My Honour and Otto Luyken; I have selected Son of Raj who at the price might have a chance - much better off at the weights as opposed to his last effort and a reasonable draw
R9: Open again where imo many have chances; I went for Chestnut Bomber who seems well weighted and Yeni did in his column advise that this would be one of his best rides on the day; main dangers as per the betting imo Field Marshall, Aladdin's Lamp and Lady Fallon
R10: Strung-out field expected over this marathon trip; I find it very difficult and even Todoque might have a chance of bottom weight (Venniker puts up 2 kgs)
R11: Best best on a difficult card might be Open Highway - holds The Playbomb Bomber imo and not a lot to beat
Enjoy

Enjoy the racing, guys. I
've just tried to watch the horse's to post, I cannot waste my time with the cr@p coverage to post. The best camera work is of the horses approaching the start. As a horse broke into a canter, the camera moved away.
I'll find something better to do.
