@Bayern, throw the kitchen sink at it when the symptoms are still mild. Waiting for the chest infection is dicey, as then its full blown.

I agree, but there is no guarantee that you will not contract the virus despite all the self medication and vitamins one takes. By taking all these boosters, one is preparing one's immune system for when you do get, if you do - to be strong enough to fight back.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

Correct... a strong immune system will stop it before the second phase. That said in a sad occurrence, at the dojo my wife trains at... the sensei's son Adam... 30 years old fit as hell (karate and bodybuilding) fell ill on 21st... passed away on christmas day...leaving a young wife and three yr old son. My wife is not impressed to put it mildly.

Some very sad news and rather difficult questions?
It certainly plays on the mind.
Lets look at the FACTS from US.
We were fine but Sue had a couple of symptoms, what did we do ?
Due to our plans and having to spend time with our kids
" lets be on the safe side"
Never expecting a POSITIVE results.
So we cancel everything and go into isolation.
Result : we still feel fine but feel like a "leper" sorry about spelling
If no test at R850 a pop we would have gone on holiday, seen the kids etc.
However how much damage could we have caused to many others?
I really don't have the answer and have no idea how many people have the virus POSITIVE and are carrying on with small symptoms or in my case NO symptoms??
Be safe 😷

Dave thanks for sharing, get well soon
We all need to do our share in trying to control this pandemic by wearing masks, self isolating and acting responsible. The new variant has caused numbers to spike and people are now sitting up and taking notice. Whilst this new variant is much more virulent, it is no more deadly than the "initial" strain. They have also announced that children can now contract the virus. This explains the spike in the number of new cases, it's gone ballistic here in Durban.
The problem i have with vaccines and South Africa, does Government have enough money to purchase sufficient doses for the entire population, if not, why not allow hospitals to purchase and sell to those who are prepared to pay to be vaccinated, rather than, purchasing "a hand full" and most are literally waiting to die because Government cannot afford 50 million doses. I think people who could afford it would be prepared to go this route.
The AstraZeneca (Oxford) vaccine looks like the one that will be most fordable with the least logistical issues. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines come with huge logistical issues, they literally have to be transported at around -20 Celsius, stored at that temperature and used within 10 days or thereabouts. If the temperature protocols are breached, the product has to be destroyed.
Here's the logistical nightmare - every receiving airport has to have freezers large enough to hold and distribute the vaccines to the receiving hospitals/clinics, who in turn must have the sufficient storage facilities in place. Setting up is going to be extremely costly. The AstraZeneca vaccine can travel at normal room temperature and may even cost less than the other two.
Any one have any thoughts on this?

My doctor who is old school never
encouraged vaccination even for Flu and never took the vaccines herself.
If pushed into a corner I would think the SPUTNIK V is the best bet in the Covid vaccines.

Mike, i was speaking from an affordability and logistical perspective. Whilst the one you mention might be the best, the question has to be asked whether South Africa can afford the cost per dose. The AstraZeneca will sell at around US$ 3.00 - 4.00, let's say with a delivered final destination cost at around R250.00. If the importer sells that at around R500.00 - R 700.00 a pop, i would be prepare to pay from my pocket.
Most other vaccines will be much more expensive due to the logistics required in the transportation.
Anyone have an idea how much the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines sell at, out of interest?
Also think people should be encouraged to have a vaccination, we need to trust the science.

@bayern ... Government made a statement about purchasing a few million vaccines and stated an amount. The maths worked out at over R1500 a pop (dont quote me I was helping some boertjie with the maths as he was screaming about it) ... So 60 million persons would be exorbitant...WITHOUT the logistics.
That said, I would never allow anybody near me or any of my loved ones with a vaccine.

@ Magi, thanks for responding.
A few things, i still believe if a person gets the vaccination, they MUST still wear a mask. We've already seen the first mutation of the virus, so by the time i am lucky enough to receive a vaccination, strong possibility it will have mutated several times more, which would not guarantee immunity from new strains. Certainly not advocating once anyone receives a vaccination, they run around hugging and kissing every stranger in the street because they are so happy.
I am a marine insurance claims clerk, and on the 23/12, i received a claim for US$550K for Covid19 test kits going to Ghana which experienced temperature breach as a result of delay. The receiving airport does not have freezers, they have fridges (coolers) with a storage temperature of 2 to 8 degrees capabilities. The consignment has to be dumped as it is life saving medication, any breach, and it is a total loss.
The logistical problems at this early stage are humongous and most countries are not geared to receive the vaccines in large quantities, the infrastructure is not in place, not yet anyway, especially on the African continent.
Someone should try and get into partnership with Government, import and sell/vaccinate the population for those prepared to pay for it. I am an Average Joe and will be lucky to have a jab by this time in 2022. As a democratic country, at least give us the opportunity to try and safe ourselves if via private enterprise - just a thought.
