Pretoria’s Steve Biko Academic Hospital has been experiencing a sharp surge in the number of COVID-19 patients, which has raised more concerns about the country’s already overwhelmed health system, due to the pandemic.

Images and video clips of the outside of the hospital flooded with patients have been circulating on social media, painting a dire picture. With the second wave of COVID-19 cases currently in full swing, this is merely a microcosm of what is happening in hospitals across the country.
The national caseload is currently at 1 231 597 after 17,421 cases were picked up on Sunday, 10 January 2021. Gauteng alone has recorded 333 842 infections since the start of the pandemic, with 46 272 active cases.
Reacting to the situation at the Steve Biko Academic hospital, the Gauteng Health Department said the facility had seen a rise in COVID-19 admissions since December 2020. It said these patients are far sicker and require critical care, with some arriving in groups and putting serious pressure on the facility.
Amid reports that some patients get turned away, the department said there is an ambulance diversion system, during which ambulances receive information on what services are under pressure in any of the hospitals.
“With non-COVID-19 patients that service get utilised but for COVID-19 patients all hospitals are inundated. COVID19 patients require immediate care. The hospital resolved that there will be no diversion of ambulance to other facilities, and no turning away of any patient as long as there is a space that a patient can be attended to fully so as to ensure more people are catered to,”

Steve Biko Hospital to receive more tents for COVID-19 patients
Some of the patients the Steve Biko Academic hospital is receiving are coming from private facilities due to lack of space, while others are self-referred from other provinces such as North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
“Furthermore, the facility is putting up two additional tents to accommodate this increase in number of patients coming to the facility. This is one of interventions by the complex to treat the rising number of COVID-19 patients,” the department’s Kwara Kekana said in a statement.
Kekana has further reiterated the provincial government’s call for residents to continue applying the necessary COVID-19 preventative measures.
“We are urging communities not to be complacent. The non-pharmaceutical interventions of wearing of mask, good hand hygiene, sanitising, avoiding closed and crowded places remain central in the preventing the further spread of COVID-19,” Kekana said.

© Provided by Eyewitness News JOHANNESBURG/CAPE TOWN - There are growing fears a black market may emerge for the so-called COVID-19 miracle drug Ivermectin.
Authorities are clamping down on the dispensing of the drug, which is used to treat and kill parasites in animals.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) on Sunday said the medication was not approved for human use in the country and any attempts to import the drug were unlawful.
A 43-year-old man was arrested last week at King Shaka International Airport for being in possession of hundreds of Ivermectin tablets.
Ivermectin has been touted by some healthcare professionals and political parties as a miracle drug for COVID-19 patients.
But SAHPRA has warned the public and doctors against distributing or consuming Ivermectin until the safety and efficacy of the drug was verified.
The regulatory body said to date there had been no positive recommendations for the use of the drug in the management of COVID-19 infections by any authority, including the Us Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization.
While it’s not the first medication to garner attention as a possible lifeline against COVID-19, there are concerns that people taking the unregulated product may be putting their lives at risk.
CRIMINAL CASE OPENED IN DURBAN
Meanwhile, a criminal case has been opened against a Durban pharmacist and hospital manager involved in dispensing Ivermectin.
The Ahmed Al-Kadi Hospital came under fire recently after a pharmacist dispensed the anti-parasitic drug to a patient.
A SAHPRA representative said they received a tip-off that the drug was available at the facility.
“We collected evidence and we confronted the hospital with this evidence. This happened on 7 January. It was a joint operation with the South African Police Service, eThekwini Metro and Organised Crime. We confronted the responsible pharmacist and he admitted he had dispensed the drug and this was confirmed by the hospital manager.”
Their investigation revealed the drug was dispensed to patients free of charge.
“SAHPRA will furthermore report the matter to the pharmacy council. The investigation into the doctors who prescribed it is ongoing and once this has been concluded, it will be reported to the HBCSA.”

Agree...public sector continue to be paid in full...social grants continue to be paid in full...theft through tenders continuing as before...
Middle and working classes in the private sector worldwide are fast disappearing...about 3 million private sector jobs lost in the private sector with many SMME's closed through impact of lockdowns and little to no concern shown...300 jobs to be lost at SABC to partly right-size a bloated propaganda machine and it is deemed a tragedy...sad what our rulers prioritise...this pandemic has been a boon for leftists in the desire to control and to accumulate power...

Please watch this, explaining how the vaccine works, and what to (possibly) do should you get sick without having had a vaccine, which will probably me most of us watching this. The answer is not Ivermectin, at around the 30 minute mark he explains what to get :-
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
