Having said that the top 7 three year olds that stay beyond 1600 are still nominated.

I wonder if Zackey will drop the weight for Vivas or they are considering Michelle for the ride hence the hesitation. Big weight swing with Star Major and the distance may have an influence.

I could be wrong here,but here goes.
Given the new race conditions which seems to favour lower rated older horses,the top 3yr old horses this year will need to be a few lengths better than in previous years.

I see Star Major having a very tough task indeed.
Only two 3 year old interests me, Note to Self who has been cleverly campaigned and has yet to put his best foot forward & Vivas Liberte who comes in with a light weight and only needs to settle in running.

The 4 year olds Zeitz, Regulation and I salute you enter the reckoning big time off of those weights. Particularly the lightly raced and niggle prone Zeitz who seems to have come right in KZN this season.

On the flip side, people seem to forget that the weight formula of 1kg = 2 lengths over the July distance fails to take into account factors like gender and the ratio of horses mass vs weight carried etc

A 540kg horse carrying 4kg more than a 460kg horse often doesn't equate to the expected 4 length difference. A horse like Legal council is a good example of one that might carry his weight to better than expected effect.

I thought 1kg was supposed to be 1 length over 1600m?

I work on 2 lengths / kg for further than 1800m.
